Signal conversion

The complete 3300 XL 8 mm arrangement uses the probe with the appropriate extension cable and Proximitor Sensor. The system output varies directly with the distance between the probe tip and conductive target, allowing static position and dynamic vibration measurements.

CONFIGURATION NOTE
1.0 m probe configuration

For a one-meter system, the probe is used without an extension cable. Longer system arrangements require the probe and extension cable lengths to correspond with the selected Proximitor Sensor system length.

TARGET MATERIAL
Standard system calibration uses AISI 4140 steel.
04 / MACHINE APPLICATION
Where this probe becomes critical

The 3300 XL 8 mm system is intended for machinery where shaft-to-bearing displacement, vibration, position or rotational reference must be continuously observed without physical contact.

Fluid-film bearing machinery
Supports radial vibration and shaft position measurement around rotating machinery.
Shaft position monitoring
Non-contact displacement measurement helps detect changes in the machine's running position.
Keyphasor reference and speed
The 3300 XL system can support rotational reference and speed measurement applications when correctly configured.
WHEN ENGINEERS SEARCH FOR THIS PART Typical replacement situations include an unstable vibration channel, an abnormal shaft-position signal, physical damage to the armored lead, connector damage, probe wear or a failed sensing point that can no longer provide a reliable measurement to the machinery protection channel.
Why replacement can become time-critical: loss of a valid proximity signal can compromise the condition-monitoring channel used to observe a critical rotating machine. Depending on the protection architecture and alarm logic, an unresolved transducer fault may contribute to an unnecessary trip, loss of monitoring capability, or delayed detection of a developing mechanical problem.

09 / BUYER QUESTIONS
Five questions worth checking before replacement
01. Why does the exact suffix matter when replacing an existing 3300 XL probe?

The suffix defines the mechanical and connection configuration. For this part, the code specifies a 100 mm unthreaded length, 150 mm case length, 1.0 m probe, connector-protector configuration and CSA/ATEX/IECEx approval option. A similar-looking 3300 XL probe can therefore have a different installation geometry.

02. If the vibration channel becomes unstable, should the probe be the first part replaced?

Not automatically. The probe, connector, extension cable where applicable, Proximitor Sensor, gap setting and monitor channel all form part of the measurement chain. A replacement decision should follow checks of the complete signal path rather than assuming every unstable reading originates at the probe.

03. Why is the recommended gap around 1.27 mm rather than simply placing the probe as close as possible?

The system has a defined 2 mm linear range, beginning at approximately 0.25 mm from the target. The recommended radial-vibration gap is about 1.27 mm, corresponding to approximately −9 Vdc, placing operation near the center of the specified linear region.

04. When would the armored version be more relevant than an unarmored configuration?

Armor adds mechanical protection around the probe cable. That distinction becomes relevant where the cable route is exposed to physical handling or installation conditions that could place additional mechanical stress on the lead.

05. What could happen to a critical machine if this sensing point remains faulty?

The consequence depends on the protection architecture. A failed or unreliable proximity channel can remove dependable shaft-position or vibration monitoring, potentially affecting alarm or shutdown functions and reducing the ability to detect a developing mechanical condition. For high-criticality rotating equipment, restoring the measurement chain promptly is therefore important.
