FIELDBUS COMMUNICATIONS / 200 SERIES
FCM2F4
A fiber optic Fieldbus Communications Module designed to extend the 200 Series Module Fieldbus between baseplates. FCM2F4 supports a nominal maximum baseplate-to-baseplate fiber optic distance of 4 km (2.48 mi), making it suitable for remote I/O placement where longer copper runs, electrical noise, or ground-potential differences are concerns.

Overview
The Foxboro FCM2F4 is a Fieldbus Communications Module used as a fiber optic extension between 200 Series baseplates. It allows Fieldbus Modules to be positioned closer to the process while the associated baseplates can be separated over a longer physical distance.
The fiber link provides electrical isolation and is not affected by common electrical disturbances such as EMI, RFI and lightning. This makes the architecture particularly useful around rotating equipment, arc-welding areas, high-voltage cable routes and installations where ground-loop or voltage-difference problems may be difficult to avoid.

02 / ENGINEERING VALUE
Why FCM2F4?
FCM2F4 is the 4 km member of the FCM2F family. Its role is not simply to extend a cable run; it enables a physically distributed 200 Series architecture while retaining a fiber-based communication path between baseplates.

04 / FAMILY POSITION
FCM2F Series
The FCM2F family provides three distance classes for fiber-based extension of the 200 Series Module Fieldbus. The selection is primarily determined by the required distance and fiber architecture.
|
SELECTION LOGIC
Why 4 km?
FCM2F4 is positioned between the 2 km FCM2F2 and 10 km FCM2F10. It is the natural choice when the required baseplate separation exceeds the shorter range but does not call for the 10 km class.

|
05 / FIELD DEPLOYMENT
Where FCM2F4 Fits
|
Remote Baseplate Placement
Useful when 200 Series FBMs need to be positioned closer to field devices while the control architecture remains physically separated.
Electrically Noisy Areas
Fiber communication is suited to environments containing rotating machinery, arc welders and high-voltage cable routes.
Lightning / Ground-Potential Concerns
The electrical isolation of the optical link helps reduce exposure to voltage differences and ground-loop conditions.

|
FIELD SYMPTOMS
When Investigation Is Needed
Intermittent communication: inspect the fiber path, connectors, link indicators and cable loss before replacing the module.
Loss of one redundant path: check the corresponding FCM, fiber pair and Fieldbus A/B connection.
No optical communication after replacement: verify that both ends use matching FCM2F types and that the fiber characteristics are correct.

FAQ |
Q1. Can FCM2F4 be used when the required baseplate distance is around 4 km?
Yes. FCM2F4 is the 4 km member of the family and provides a nominal maximum baseplate-to-baseplate fiber optic distance of up to 4 km. The actual installation should remain within the specified optical loss and cable requirements.
Q2. Is FCM2F4 a suitable replacement when an existing 2 km FCM2F2 no longer provides enough distance?
FCM2F4 provides the next distance class in the FCM2F family, but a replacement should be evaluated against the complete fieldbus topology, fiber type, connector arrangement and the matching module at the opposite end.
Q3. Does FCM2F4 require a second module for every installation?
Not always. A non-redundant configuration can use one FCM per baseplate. For a redundant Fieldbus arrangement, FCMs are mounted in pairs to support the A and B paths.
Q4. What fiber should be selected for FCM2F4 when replacing an installed module?
FCM2F4 requires multimode graded-index glass fiber with a 62.5 μm core and 125 μm cladding, 0.275 numerical aperture and ST-type connectors. The specified optical loss limits also need to be respected.
Q5. Why choose FCM2F4 instead of FCM2F10 for a replacement project?
FCM2F4 is intended for the 4 km distance class, while FCM2F10 is the 10 km class and uses single-mode fiber. When the required link is within the 4 km class, FCM2F4 can provide the appropriate family-level solution without moving to the longer-distance FCM2F10 architecture.
