Fieldbus Communications Module

The Foxboro FCM2F2 is a fiber-optic communications extender for 200 Series Fieldbus Modules. It allows fieldbus modules to be positioned closer to the plant process while maintaining communication with the associated baseplate through a fiber-optic link.

The FCM2F2 supports a nominal maximum baseplate-to-baseplate fiber distance of 2 km (1.24 mi). Fiber transmission also provides electrical isolation and strong resistance to EMI, RFI and lightning-related interference, making the architecture suitable for electrically demanding industrial environments.

01 / PRODUCT CHARACTERISTICS

Designed for Long-Distance Fieldbus Extension

Fiber-Based Isolation

The optical link separates the remote fieldbus section from the electrical connection between baseplates. This helps protect communication from voltage differences and ground-loop conditions.

Industrial Noise Resistance

Fiber communication is not affected by EMI, RFI and lightning in the same manner as long electrical signal runs, making it useful around rotating machinery, arc welders and high-voltage cable routes.

Redundant or Simplex Deployment

A redundant arrangement uses paired FCMs on the baseplates, while a non-redundant configuration can use one FCM per baseplate.

The three FCM2F variants share the same basic role of extending the 200 Series Module Fieldbus through fiber. The principal selection point is the required fiber distance.

For a fiber link, the FCMs at both ends must be the same type. Therefore, FCM2F2 should be selected as a matched FCM2F2 link rather than mixed with FCM2F4 or FCM2F10.
Baseplate Architecture

FCM2F2 mounts on a 200 Series FBM baseplate. A baseplate can accommodate up to eight FBMs or a combination of FBMs and FCMs. Baseplates within 60 m can also be linked using standard twinax-pair cable where an FCM fiber extension is not required.

Redundant Arrangement

For a redundant fiber connection between two baseplates, a pair of FCMs is used on each baseplate. A non-redundant configuration uses one FCM on each baseplate.

Questions Buyers Usually Need Resolved

Q1. Can FCM2F2 be used when the remote 200 Series baseplate is about 2 km from the control-side baseplate?

Yes. FCM2F2 is the 2 km member of the FCM2F family and provides a nominal maximum baseplate-to-baseplate fiber distance of 2 km. The actual installation should also satisfy the specified fiber characteristics and signal-loss limits.

Q2. Is FCM2F2 a suitable replacement when an existing installation uses FCM2F4 or FCM2F10?

The model should not be selected by physical similarity alone. FCM2F2 is specified for a 2 km nominal link, while FCM2F4 and FCM2F10 support 4 km and 10 km respectively. Replacement selection should therefore confirm the required distance and the FCM type installed at the opposite end.

Q3. What should be checked before ordering FCM2F2 for an existing fiber connection?

The key checks are the FCM model at the opposite end, the 2 km distance requirement, multimode graded-index glass fiber, 62.5 μm core, 125 μm cladding, 0.275 NA, ST-type connectors and the permitted signal-loss characteristics.

When the installation requirement is within that range, it provides the appropriate FCM2F distance class without selecting the 4 km or 10 km variants.
