FBI200

HDLC Fieldbus Isolation with Extended Reach

FBI200 provides isolation, filtering and repeating functions between the control processor side and an extended fieldbus. On 2 Mbps 200 Series communication, the module provides galvanically isolated drivers and supports twinaxial cable extension up to 305 m (1000 ft). For 268 Kbps communication used by 100 Series FBMs and compatible migration devices, the extended fieldbus distance can reach 1830 m (6000 ft).

Why FBI200 matters in an installed Foxboro architecture

The module allows fieldbus extension while controlling which baud-rate traffic reaches the connected field devices. This is particularly useful where 100 Series and 200 Series FBMs coexist, or where remote FBMs must be placed farther from the associated control processor.

Engineering Characteristics

FBI200 & Related Fieldbus Hardware

FBI200 belongs to the Foxboro fieldbus communication infrastructure used between control processors and fieldbus modules. Its role is different from an I/O module: it manages the communication path, isolation, filtering and extension of the HDLC fieldbus.

FBI200 Supports 268 Kbps and 2 Mbps HDLC fieldbus communication. It can filter the two communication rates and provides fieldbus extension and galvanic isolation for the 2 Mbps path.	FBI200A A related fieldbus isolator/filter used in the 100 Series upgrade architecture. Its installation role and mounting arrangement differ from the FBI200, so the two should be selected according to the existing fieldbus topology.
Selection point For replacement purchasing, match the existing processor type, FBM generation, fieldbus baud rate, baseplate arrangement and cable topology before selecting FBI200 or FBI200A.

Remote 200 Series FBMs
Extend the 2 Mbps HDLC fieldbus toward remote 200 Series FBM locations, with the applicable cable distance limited to 305 m per defined section.

Mixed 100 / 200 Series Architecture
With an FCP270 arrangement, FBI200 can filter the fieldbus traffic so 268 Kbps traffic reaches 100 Series devices while 2 Mbps traffic reaches 200 Series devices.

Fieldbus Extension
Repeater functionality allows the 2 Mbps fieldbus to be extended in defined 305 m sections using the appropriate fieldbus cabling and termination hardware.

01 / No expected fieldbus activity

Check the module status LEDs, local-fieldbus receive indication, extended-fieldbus receive indication and selected communication mode.

02 / Baud-rate mismatch symptoms

Confirm that the baseplate mode corresponds with the intended 268 Kbps, 2 Mbps or mixed-rate architecture. An incorrect mode can prevent the intended traffic from reaching the associated FBMs.

03 / Long-distance communication issue

Verify the total fieldbus cable length, termination assemblies, splitter/terminator arrangement and the number of FBI200 extension sections before replacing the module.

Can FBI200 be selected when a control processor must communicate with both 100 Series and 200 Series FBMs? Yes, in the appropriate FCP270 architecture. FBI200 can filter the 268 Kbps traffic intended for 100 Series devices and the 2 Mbps traffic intended for 200 Series devices, enabling dual-rate fieldbus communication.	How should FBI200 be evaluated when the existing fieldbus run exceeds the normal local cable distance? Check the fieldbus rate and topology first. FBI200 supports up to 305 m for the 2 Mbps path and up to 1830 m for the 268 Kbps path under the specified configurations. Multiple 305 m 2 Mbps sections can be used with the appropriate repeater arrangement.
