Communication function
ALE111 is an Ethernet communication module used by a Field Control Station to communicate with external subsystems. It can be mounted on applicable field control and bus-node hardware and transfers subsystem data through an Ethernet connection. Within the control application, subsystem data can be handled through the communication I/O area and used by function blocks in a manner comparable to general analog and digital I/O signals.

01 / Ethernet Communication Role
ALE111 provides an Ethernet interface between the Field Control Station and connected subsystems. The module uses an IEEE 802.3 10BASE-T physical interface and communicates through a single RJ-45 port. The standard transmission speed is 10 Mbps and the transmission method is half-duplex.

ALE111 stores subsystem data in the communication module's I/O image. The FCS accesses that image asynchronously and can reference or set the data through its communication I/O area. This architecture allows subsystem values to participate in sequence-control and regulatory-control processing.

Q1. When replacing an ALE111-SE1, should the new unit be matched by the complete suffix rather than only the ALE111 base model?
Yes. The suffix carries configuration details. ALE111-SE1 combines the S type, E protection designation and the ISA Standard G3 option. A replacement should therefore be checked against the installed configuration instead of treating every ALE111 variant as identical.
Q2. Can an ALE111-SE1 be selected simply because the existing system has an Ethernet connection?
Not by Ethernet availability alone. ALE111 is specifically an Ethernet communication module for the applicable CENTUM VP FCS architecture. The installed FCS, mounting position, communication function and connected subsystem should all be checked before selecting a replacement.
Q3. If an ALE111-SE1 is being used for subsystem communication, can one module simultaneously perform several communication functions?
No. The ALE111 architecture establishes one communication function for each module. Multiple communication functions are not performed simultaneously on a single ALE111. The required subsystem protocol should therefore be identified before assigning the module.
Q4. Is ALE111-SE1 suitable when a project needs a long Ethernet run between the FCS and subsystem?
The specified 10BASE-T transmission route uses 100 Ω twisted-pair cable with a maximum segment distance of 100 m. If the planned physical route exceeds that distance, the network architecture should be reviewed rather than assuming that one direct segment will cover the complete route.
Q5. What should be checked when an ALE111-SE1 replacement is intended for a redundant communication arrangement?
ALE111 supports dual-redundant communication by using two ALE111 modules in adjacent odd- and even-numbered slots of the same node unit. The existing node arrangement and communication architecture should therefore be checked before ordering a single replacement module for a redundant pair.
