MTL / EATON PROCESS SAFETY
MTL831C
INTRINSICALLY SAFE ANALOG TRANSMITTER
A field-side temperature and millivolt acquisition node
The MTL831C transfers hazardous-area analog signals over a shielded twisted-pair data highway to an MTL838C receiver. It accepts up to 16 inputs and supports thermocouple, millivolt, RTD and potentiometer applications.

03 / FIELD INSTALLATION
The MTL831C can be installed in safe or hazardous areas according to the application. For the published accuracy specifications, it is mounted on a vertical plane using vertical or horizontal DIN rail. The unit is designed for T-section DIN-rail mounting.
Installation note
Heat sources that create a temperature gradient across the transmitter can affect measurement accuracy. |

|
| 01 One MTL838C can accommodate one or two MTL831C transmitters. |
02 Two transmitters provide up to 32 analog channels across the system. |
03 For hazardous-area installations, the MTL5553 isolator/power supply is used in the safe area. |

ADDRESS / CONTROL
Two Addresses.
One Receiver. The hardware address is selected with the A/S terminals. With the terminals open, the transmitter is address 1. A jumper across A/S sets address 2.

|
SENSOR CONFIGURATION
Sensor types are configured through the MTL838C PC software or Modbus. The 16 channels can be configured for mixed sensor types rather than requiring every channel to use the same sensor category.
|
STATUS MONITORING
The transmitter has POWER and ERROR LEDs. A blinking POWER indication represents successful packet reception, while ERROR illumination indicates CRC errors in received packets.

01
Highway
The same data highway carries communication and DC power to the transmitter.

|
THERMOCOUPLE
Burnout detection is supported by monitoring thermocouple resistance.

RTD
2-wire, 3-wire and 4-wire RTD configurations are available.
|
mV
Direct millivolt inputs can be assigned to individual channels.
|
POT
Potentiometer inputs are part of the supported input architecture.
|
MIXED
Different sensor categories may be mixed across the 16 channels.

Q1 — Can MTL831C replace an existing transmitter without rebuilding every sensor configuration?
In the MTL830C architecture, sensor configuration is retained by the MTL838C. When an MTL831C is replaced and powered, the receiver can automatically transfer the retained configuration to the replacement transmitter. The actual replacement should still be checked against the installed configuration and hazardous-area requirements.
|
Q2 — Can MTL831C handle mixed sensor types on the same transmitter?
Yes. The 16 input channels can use different supported sensor categories. The architecture allows combinations of thermocouple, millivolt, RTD and potentiometer inputs, with the applicable channel configuration handled through the MTL838C.
|
|
|
Q3 — What should be checked when MTL831C communication becomes unstable on a long cable run?
Cable type, cable resistance, electrical interference and the installation configuration all affect the usable highway length. Eaton recommends shielded twisted-pair cabling and notes typical distances of about 1 km for IS applications and 2 km for non-IS applications. Routing near high-voltage lines, VFDs and VFD-driven motors should be avoided because these can introduce communication noise.
|
Q4 — What is the difference between MTL831C and MTL831C-PS when selecting a replacement?
Both belong to the same transmitter architecture, but the terminal arrangement differs. MTL831C uses fixed screw-terminal sensor inputs, while MTL831C-PS uses pluggable screw-terminal inputs. The installed wiring and connector arrangement should therefore be checked before selecting a direct replacement.
|
|
|
Q5 — When is MTL831C the right architecture for an existing MTL830C system expansion?
MTL831C is suited to applications where additional hazardous-area analog temperature or millivolt channels need to be brought to the safe area through the MTL830C architecture. One or two MTL831C transmitters can operate with an MTL838C receiver, allowing up to 32 analog channels at the receiver side. For Zone 0 or other intrinsically safe installations, the MTL5553 isolator/power supply is part of the required highway arrangement.
