Repeater Power Supply for 4–20 mA Transmitters
The MTL5544D is designed to energize a conventional 2- or 3-wire 4–20 mA transmitter located in a hazardous area and reproduce the current into safe-area circuits. Its fully floating transmitter supply and galvanic isolation create a clear separation between hazardous-area field wiring and safe-area signal circuits. The unit provides two safe-area output paths. Channel 1 supports HART communication for suitable 2-wire transmitters, while Channel 2 provides a conventional analogue output path without HART communication.

Output & HART Architecture
The MTL5544D reproduces the transmitter current into two safe-area output circuits. The output paths provide separation from the hazardous-area transmitter loop while retaining the 4–20 mA analogue signal. For a suitable 2-wire HART transmitter, Channel 1 provides a communication path for digital signals superimposed on the analogue current. Channel 2 is intended for conventional analogue use and does not support HART communication.

Output Loading
Safe-area load resistance is specified up to 450 Ω at 20 mA and up to 360 Ω at 24 mA. The output resistance is greater than 1 MΩ.

The MTL5500 family covers a broad range of intrinsically safe galvanic interface functions. Within the repeater power supply group, the MTL5544D is suited to 4–20 mA transmitter loops where a hazardous-area transmitter must be powered while the signal is reproduced into safe-area circuits.

01 · Can MTL5544D replace an existing 4–20 mA repeater in a hazardous-area loop?
It can be considered when the existing interface requires a 2- or 3-wire 4–20 mA transmitter supply, safe-area signal repetition and compatible power, load and hazardous-area requirements. Before replacement, verify the transmitter wiring, output load, certification requirements and terminal arrangement rather than treating the model number alone as sufficient. |
02 · What should buyers verify before selecting MTL5544D for a HART loop?
The key purchasing point is the communication path: HART is supported on Channel 1 for suitable 2-wire transmitters, while Channel 2 does not support HART. The safe-area load must also remain within the specified resistance range so the analogue and communication functions can operate correctly. |

03 · Does MTL5544D provide enough output capacity for two safe-area loads?
The design provides two safe-area output paths, and the operating arrangement requires a suitable load to be present on both output channels. For a replacement project, check the actual receiving devices and their loop resistance before commissioning, especially where temporary test wiring is used. |
04 · Is MTL5544D suitable when panel space is limited?
The unit is designed for T-section 35 mm DIN rail mounting and has a width of approximately 15.8 mm, making its narrow form factor useful for dense interface assemblies. The complete panel arrangement should still allow the required wiring, ferrules, heat dissipation and installation clearances. |

05 · What makes MTL5544D useful for lifecycle replacement projects?
Its combination of a floating transmitter supply, galvanic isolation, 4–20 mA signal repetition and dual safe-area output paths allows one interface to serve both process-current distribution and downstream control-system requirements.
