The Motorola MVME162-020A is a 25 MHz embedded controller built around the MC68040 processor with memory management and floating-point capability. Its 4 MB DRAM and 512 KB SRAM configuration distinguishes it from lower-memory members of the MVME162 family.
The VMEbus interface is central to this model's system role. It supports integration with compatible VME-based equipment and communication between the local processor and the wider bus architecture. Correct selection still depends on the host chassis, bus addressing and data-width requirements, firmware, installed expansion hardware and application software.

Before ordering, confirm the original CPU board, VMEbus role, required addressing and data widths, serial connections, transition module and software assumptions. This model's VMEbus capability is not equivalent to the non-VMEbus MVME162-014A configuration.
VERIFY PART COMPATIBILITY ↗Confirm board seating, power supply rails, chassis airflow, memory configuration, firmware revision and bus termination or addressing requirements applicable to the host system. The serial interface module and transition-module wiring should also match the existing installation.
The family includes battery-backed memory and a time-of-day clock. When replacing a board, check whether the application relies on retained values, clock settings or board-specific initialization. Keep a record of existing settings before making changes.
Choose by exact configuration rather than family name. Processor, memory and bus availability can change the suitability of a replacement.

MVME162-020A is the stronger match when the original system specifically requires the MC68040 and VMEbus-equipped configuration. The -014A is not a direct equivalent because it lacks the VMEbus interface and uses the MC68LC040 processor. The -001 has a lower DRAM capacity. Validate the full system design before substitution.

They have different interface configurations. MVME162-020A includes the VMEbus interface, while MVME162-014A is configured without it and includes Ethernet. Verify the chassis, software, network requirements and complete system design before substitution.
Neither Ethernet nor SCSI is fitted in the -020A configuration. If the application relies on either interface, check the existing architecture and required external or alternative communication hardware before ordering.
The MC68040 includes floating-point capability, while the MC68LC040 variant does not provide the same processor feature set. Application dependencies, software assumptions and the original board configuration should be checked before using a different processor variant.
Check the host chassis, bus role, address and data-width requirements, installed boards, transition-module connections and application access patterns. The exact integration requirements depend on the surrounding system.
Record firmware and board revision, verify the 4 MB DRAM configuration, confirm supply rails and cooling, and check bus and serial connections. Review retained settings and battery-backed circuitry before putting the controller back into service.
