FOXBORO DCS · FIELD DEVICE CONTROL
FDC280
Field Device Controller 280

A distributed, optionally fault-tolerant controller designed to integrate Ethernet and serial field devices directly into a Foxboro DCS environment while also providing regulatory, logic, timing, sequential control, data acquisition and alarm functions.
One controller — two operational domains
The FDC280 uses a dual-core ARM System on a Chip. The Control Core runs the FDC280 control software and Foxboro DCS Control Network communication functions, while the I/O Core runs the field-device integration functions.
This architecture allows field-device communication and process-control functions to operate within one distributed controller instead of requiring a separate fieldbus-module layer for supported device integration.
Control Core → control strategy + Control Network
I/O Core → field-device integration + device communications

Field Devices
Ethernet / Serial interfaces
Supported field-device communication can use Ethernet or serial interfaces, with protocol-specific drivers providing the device connection.
Ethernet field-device side
The FDC280 baseplate provides two copper Ethernet RJ-45 connections for field-device networks. Supported connections operate at 10/100 Mbps or 1 Gbps and can connect directly to Ethernet field devices or through customer-supplied Ethernet switches.
The field-device Ethernet network is separate from the Foxboro DCS Control Network architecture.
Serial field-device side
Four serial ports are available. Each port can be individually configured for RS-232, RS-422 or RS-485 communication, allowing different serial interface requirements to be handled within the same controller.
Up to 128 RS-485 field devices are supported across the four serial ports, with a maximum of 32 devices on each RS-485 port.
02 / DEVICE INTEGRATION
Protocol-ready field connectivity
Modbus TCP
The FDC280 can integrate supported Modbus field devices through Ethernet using the Modbus TCP driver.
Modbus RTU
The serial driver supports Modbus RTU field-device communication over the FDC280 serial interfaces.
Triconex System Access
The FDC280 supports the Triconex System Access Application driver for applicable device integration architectures.
The available driver set depends on the FDC280 software image and installed driver configuration. Driver compatibility should therefore be checked against the target system before a replacement or upgrade.
03 / FAULT-TOLERANT DESIGN
Two modules, one coordinated control path
A fault-tolerant FDC280 installation uses two controller modules mounted in adjacent dedicated positions on the FDC280 baseplate.
Both modules process Control Network information simultaneously. Fault detection and comparison mechanisms determine which module should remain Primary.
Primary → active control
Shadow → synchronized monitoring and redundancy
What redundancy means at the I/O side
The Primary FDC280 reads and writes field-device I/O values while the Shadow FDC280 monitors device connection status. I/O values are maintained internally so that the Shadow module can assume the Primary role when required.
For single-ported field devices, the redundant connection can extend to the Ethernet switch or serial termination arrangement, while dual-ported devices can support redundant paths farther into the field-device network.
Either FDC280 module can be removed or replaced without removing power from the FDC280 baseplate.
04 / CONTROL CAPABILITY
More than a communication gateway
01
Regulatory control
Supports process-control strategies implemented through configured functional control blocks.
02
Logic & sequence
Performs logic, timing and sequential control directly within the controller.
03
Data acquisition
Acquires field data for control, display and historical processing within the Foxboro DCS environment.
04
Alarm processing
Provides alarm detection and notification as part of the controller's process-control functions.

06 / MAINTENANCE DESIGN
Built for field-mounted service
LCD status visibility
The faceplate LCD can display the letterbug, operating role, module position, part number, image version, hardware revision and Control Network connection status.
LED diagnostics
Front-panel LEDs indicate FDC280 operating status and the Ethernet connection status to field devices. Network adapter LEDs provide additional power and Control Network communication status.
Field replacement
The redundant architecture permits a module to be removed or replaced without removing power from the baseplate, while the remaining module continues supporting the redundant arrangement.
Self-hosting capability
When configured for self-hosting, the FDC280 can boot and execute its configured control strategy using a valid checkpoint database stored in flash memory, even when the host workstation is not online.
Time synchronization
The Foxboro DCS environment supports external UTC synchronization from GPS satellites or an internal synchronization mechanism. Field inputs are time stamped when received by the FDC280, with a minimum scan time of 10 times per second.

09 / BUYER QUESTIONS
FDC280 — Five questions before replacement
01
What should be matched before replacing an FDC280 in a fault-tolerant installation?
The replacement should be checked against the existing FDC280 arrangement, including the dedicated RH101KF baseplate, module position, network adapter type and revision, software image/driver configuration, and the field-device communication architecture. A fault-tolerant pair uses two dedicated adjacent module positions and the baseplate interconnection.
02
Can FDC280 replace a conventional controller-plus-I/O arrangement when the requirement is field-device integration?
The FDC280 was specifically designed to provide direct field-device integration without additional Foxboro DCS Fieldbus Modules for supported protocols. Whether it can replace a particular existing architecture depends on the connected device protocols, I/O requirements, baseplate arrangement and control strategy.
03
Why is the serial-port configuration important when selecting an FDC280?
Each of the four serial ports can independently use RS-232, RS-422 or RS-485. This matters when the installed field devices use different physical interfaces. For RS-485 networks, the FDC280 supports up to 32 devices per port and up to 128 devices across the four ports.
04
Does FDC280 redundancy provide the same protection all the way through a single-ported field device?
Not in the same way as the controller's Control Network fault-tolerant mechanism. The FDC280 modules provide redundant communication toward the field-device network, but a single-ported field device itself remains a single physical endpoint. Redundancy can extend to the Ethernet switch or serial termination arrangement depending on the field architecture.
05
What makes an FDC280 useful when the host workstation is temporarily unavailable?
When self-hosting is configured and a valid checkpoint control database is stored in flash memory, the FDC280 can boot itself and execute its configured control scheme even when the host workstation is not online. This capability is relevant when evaluating controller behavior during workstation or host-side maintenance.
