FoxCom™ Redundant Dual Baud Rate Intelligent Device Interface

Digital communication built around redundant field-device connectivity

Foxboro FBM246 is a redundant intelligent device interface built around eight individual FoxCom communication channels. Each channel provides bidirectional digital communication with a Foxboro Intelligent Field Device, while channel isolation separates the individual field loops.

The module pair supports independently configured 600 or 4800 baud operation. At 4800 baud, messages are received at up to ten times per second; at 600 baud, the rate is up to two messages per second. The architecture also supports internal isolated field-device power or an external power arrangement.

FoxCom communication

Communication is point-to-point, master/slave, asynchronous and half-duplex. Each channel can independently operate at 600 or 4800 baud according to the connected field-device configuration.

Field-device data handling

Digital messages can contain up to three measured variables in IEEE 32-bit floating-point format together with security data, diagnostics and message checking. The bidirectional link also supports device-related values and configurable device attributes.

Designed around replaceable module pairs

A redundant FBM246 pair uses a common field termination arrangement. Either module can be removed and replaced without removing the field-device termination cabling, power or communication cabling connected to the healthy module.

Module status: front-panel LEDs provide visual indication of operating condition and communication activity.

Baseplate & termination arrangement

FBM246 modules mount on a Modular Baseplate that can be DIN-rail mounted horizontally or vertically, or rack mounted horizontally with the appropriate mounting kit. A redundant pair occupies adjacent baseplate positions.

Termination assemblies provide the field wiring interface. Non-intrinsically safe and intrinsically safe arrangements are available, with the appropriate termination assembly and field protection arrangement selected for the installation.

Termination cable lengths are available up to 30 m (98 ft), allowing the termination assembly to be positioned in the same or an adjacent enclosure.

FBM246 — Five practical questions before replacement

01	Can FBM246 be considered when an existing redundant FoxCom interface needs a direct module replacement? Yes, when the existing architecture is built around the FBM246 function and its associated redundant baseplate, adapter and termination arrangement. Before ordering, the complete field-side configuration should be checked because the module is part of a larger redundant I/O path rather than an isolated field component.
02	Why does the FBM246 replacement require attention to the termination assembly? The field wiring reaches the redundant FBM pair through the termination arrangement and redundant adapter. Different termination assemblies support non-intrinsically safe or intrinsically safe installations, so matching the module alone does not guarantee the correct field-side configuration.
03	Does FBM246 support field devices operating at different FoxCom baud rates? Yes. Each channel can independently use either 600 or 4800 baud according to the configuration of the connected field device. This allows different channels on the same FBM246 arrangement to operate at their respective configured rates.
04	What should be checked when an FBM246 loop uses an external power supply? A common external supply used by multiple loops requires a Cable Balun Module to maintain digital communication line balance. The balun arrangement is not required for loops powered by the FBM246 internal isolated supply. The field loop resistance and available compliance voltage also need to remain within the specified operating limits.
05	Can one FBM246 module be replaced without disconnecting the field termination wiring? The redundant architecture is designed so either module can be removed and replaced without removing the field-device termination cabling, power or communication cabling from the healthy module. Plant operating conditions should still be considered before carrying out the replacement.
