PROFIBUS DP Slave Gateway for EtherNet/IP™, Modbus® TCP/IP and Modbus® Serial
The PLX51-PBS provides an industrial communication bridge between PROFIBUS DP slave networks and EtherNet/IP, Modbus TCP/IP or Modbus Serial systems. Its architecture is intended for applications where existing PROFIBUS equipment needs to exchange process data with modern Ethernet-based control systems.

For replacement planning, the PROFIBUS network role is one of the first points to confirm. A slave-side application should not automatically be substituted with a master-oriented configuration simply because both products belong to the same family.

Can PLX51-PBS replace a PROFIBUS gateway when the existing PLC remains the PROFIBUS DP Master?
PLX51-PBS is specifically intended for PROFIBUS DP Slave operation, so it can fit an architecture in which the existing PROFIBUS master remains in control of the DP network. Before replacement, the existing slave configuration, I/O mapping and Ethernet-side controller configuration should be checked against the replacement setup.

Why would PLX51-PBS be selected instead of PLX51-PBM?
The deciding factor is the PROFIBUS network role. PLX51-PBS is intended for Slave operation, while PLX51-PBM supports Master or Slave operation. If the application requires the gateway itself to control the PROFIBUS DP network as master, PLX51-PBM is the relevant family member to evaluate.

Is PLX51-PBS suitable when a PROFIBUS application requires more than 244 bytes of cyclic data?
PLX51-PBS supports up to 1536 bytes of cyclic Input and 1536 bytes of cyclic Output data. It can also emulate up to 10 PROFIBUS slave nodes, providing an architecture for larger cyclic data requirements without relying entirely on extended acyclic data exchanges.
