The MVME5100 combines Motorola PowerPlus II architecture with a high-performance processor and memory subsystem, PCI connectivity, VMEbus access, dual Ethernet, serial interfaces and PMC expansion. PowerPlus II Architecture

MVME5100 belongs to Motorola's PowerPlus II VME processor family. The architecture combines processor, memory control and PCI host bridge functions around the Hawk ASIC, while a Universe VME controller provides the bridge into the VMEbus environment.

Depending on the exact MVME5100 configuration, the platform supports MPC7400 / MPC7410 processors with AltiVec capability as well as MPC750-class and MPC755-class processors.

The MVME5100 family was offered in multiple processor, memory, cache and front-panel configurations. Published configurations include boards using MPC7400/MPC7410 processors and lower-power MPC750/MPC755-class processors. Memory configurations could combine onboard ECC SDRAM with optional RAM500 mezzanine modules. Front-panel and rear-I/O arrangements could also vary through PMC, IPMC and transition-module combinations.

Can MVME5100 replace an older VME PowerPC processor board?

Potentially, but replacement should be checked against the installed VME chassis, backplane requirements, processor configuration, P2 I/O arrangement, PMC/IPMC usage, transition module and software environment. The MVME5100 supports configurable VME and rear-I/O arrangements rather than one universal I/O combination.

How should MVME5100 memory be matched when replacing a board?

Memory capacity is configuration-dependent. The family supports onboard ECC SDRAM and optional RAM500 memory mezzanine modules, so the replacement should be matched by exact board configuration rather than by the MVME5100 family name alone.

Can MVME5100 retain an existing PMC-based I/O architecture?

The platform provides two 32/64-bit PMC positions and supports rear-I/O arrangements. Compatibility depends on the PMC type, installed transition hardware and the selected P2 mode, so the existing PMC and rear-I/O path should be matched before ordering.
What should be checked when an MVME5100 is used with a legacy transition module?

The MVME5100 can support legacy I/O arrangements through IPMC761 or IPMC712 configurations. The exact transition module, P2 adapter and jumper configuration must correspond to the intended I/O mode.

Does MVME5100 use the same processor and cache configuration in every version?
