Move the ControlNet path from copper into fiber.
The 1786-RPFM is a medium-distance fiber module for ControlNet repeater architectures. It supports fiber sections up to 3000 m (9843 ft), subject to fiber quality, splice count, connector count and the total optical attenuation budget. The fiber link provides ground isolation between nodes and is less susceptible to noisy environments than copper media. The module has two fiber channels and operates with 24V DC system power. Important lifecycle status:
Rockwell Automation currently lists 1786-RPFM as discontinued effective December 30, 2025, with an Engineering Replacement category. It is therefore primarily relevant to existing installations, maintenance and controlled replacement planning. |

| 3 km is a maximum, not an automatic guarantee The usable distance depends on the actual fiber quality, number of splices, connector count and total optical attenuation. |
13.3 dB is the optical boundary The total light loss through the complete fiber section must remain below 13.3 dB. A long cable with excessive connector or splice loss can therefore fail the link budget. |
OM1 multimode fiber The medium-distance architecture uses 62.5/125 µm multimode OM1 fiber with the specified ControlNet fiber connection arrangement. |
|
1786-RPFS
Short-distance fiber solution for 0…300 m applications. It uses a different fiber architecture and should not be selected simply because the connector looks similar.
|
1786-RPFM
Medium-distance solution for sections up to 3000 m, using 62.5/125 µm OM1 fiber and a total attenuation limit below 13.3 dB.
|
Long-distance families
The 1786-RPFRL/RPFRXL families address longer-distance architectures. They are a different selection path when the required fiber section exceeds the medium-distance range.
|
| Controls & indicators Power status and Channel 1 / Channel 2 indicators help distinguish module power and channel conditions. |
Physical format IP20 form factor with two fiber ports and a 24V DC power architecture. |
| Installation planning Keep unused fiber interfaces protected. Connector cleanliness and splice quality directly affect the available attenuation budget. |
Existing-system focus Because the product is discontinued, the strongest application case is maintenance and controlled replacement of installed ControlNet systems rather than new network architecture. |

| 01 — Is 1786-RPFM suitable for a new ControlNet installation today? Rockwell Automation currently lists the 1786-RPFM as discontinued effective December 30, 2025 and assigns an Engineering Replacement category. It is therefore better treated as a maintenance or existing-system replacement part rather than the default choice for a new architecture. |
| 02 — Does a 3 km cable automatically qualify a 1786-RPFM link? No. The maximum distance is 3000 m, but the complete optical section must also stay below 13.3 dB total attenuation. Fiber quality, connectors and splices all affect the usable distance. |
| 03 — Why would 1786-RPFM be selected instead of 1786-RPFS? The RPFM addresses medium-distance sections up to 3 km, while the RPFS addresses short-distance sections up to 300 m. They are intended for different fiber-distance ranges and cable architectures. |
| 04 — What happens if I install four 1786-RPFM modules on one repeater adapter? Four modules is the maximum module count, but the combined module power also cannot exceed 1.6 A at 5V DC. Whichever limit is reached first controls the installation. |
| 05 — What should I check when replacing a failed 1786-RPFM in an operating network? Check the exact installed architecture, fiber type, connector condition, total optical attenuation, channel indicators and repeater-adapter loading. Because the product is discontinued, engineering replacement requirements should also be evaluated before changing the network design. |
