01 / PROFILE
Control
Architecture |
A configurable control core for demanding turbine operation
The 505 platform is designed for single or dual split-range actuator steam turbines. Its field-programmable architecture allows the same control platform to be configured for different generator or mechanical-drive applications. The controller may operate as a stand-alone turbine control or as part of a plant Distributed Control System. Its control structure includes Speed/Load, Auxiliary, Auxiliary 2 and Cascade PID functions, with an additional isolated PID loop available for an independent analog-output application. |

Typical turbine-control environment
The 8200-1300 belongs to the 505 turbine control family and is applied to steam-turbine systems using single or dual split-range actuators. It can be configured as the primary turbine control or integrated with a plant DCS through Modbus communications.

06 / BUYER QUESTIONS
Why the
exact model matters |
01 — Why choose Woodward 8200-1300 instead of another 505 power variant?
The key distinction is the power configuration. 8200-1300 is the LVDC version with an 18–36 Vdc input and ordinary-location compliance, while 8200-1301 uses AC/DC input and 8200-2302 is the LVDC ATEX-compliance version. Matching the replacement to the existing power architecture and required compliance is therefore essential. 02 — What makes Woodward 8200-1300 useful when a turbine control replacement must preserve the existing control strategy?
The 505 platform is field configurable rather than tied to a single turbine arrangement. Its control structure supports Speed/Load, Auxiliary, Auxiliary 2 and Cascade PID functions, while an optional isolated PID loop can support an independent analog-output application. This makes configuration compatibility more important than simply matching the enclosure appearance. 03 — How can Woodward 8200-1300 help narrow a suspected controller-side failure before replacement?
The control provides CPU health, IOLOCK, alarm and trip indications, while the controller also exposes diagnostic fault codes. Its input, output and actuator circuits include monitoring functions, allowing technicians to distinguish a control-side problem from issues in field wiring, sensors or actuator circuits before committing to a replacement. 04 — Can Woodward 8200-1300 remain part of a plant DCS rather than operating as an isolated turbine controller?
Yes. The 505 architecture can operate independently or communicate with a plant DCS. The platform provides Modbus communication through Ethernet and serial interfaces, with the serial interface supporting RS-232 or RS-485 and ASCII or RTU Modbus transmission. 05 — What should a buyer verify before ordering Woodward 8200-1300 as a critical spare?
Confirm the exact part number, required LVDC power range, turbine actuator arrangement, installed control configuration and applicable location requirements. It is also useful to compare the existing control revision because the current 505 revision uses different OS/Footprint and GAP part numbers from earlier revisions. |
