
In industrial automation, digital output modules may look simple on paper, but their electrical characteristics can have a direct impact on how reliably field devices are controlled. As part of the Honeywell MasterLogic-50 I/O platform, the MLE-TN08A provides 8 transistor output points. Its output architecture uses an open-collector, sink-type configuration, making it suitable for controlling compatible DC loads in PLC-based automation systems. Honeywell documentation specifies a rated load voltage of 12/24 VDC, with an allowable load-voltage range of 10.2 to 26.4 VDC.
The most notable feature of the MLE-TN08A is its eight-channel digital output arrangement. Each point can handle up to 0.5 A, while the module uses a common connection for the eight outputs. This configuration keeps the wiring relatively straightforward when several DC actuators or other discrete loads need to be controlled from the same PLC station.
The module also incorporates photo-coupler insulation, helping separate the output circuitry from the control side. A Zener diode surge absorber is used in the output circuit, while the specified off-state leakage current is 0.1 mA or less. These details become particularly relevant when the module is connected to field devices that are sensitive to leakage or switching transients.
Another practical specification is the low on-state voltage drop. Honeywell lists a maximum voltage drop of approximately 0.4 V, helping reduce unnecessary voltage loss across the switching device when an output is energized.
For applications involving frequent switching, response time is an important consideration. The MLE-TN08A specifies 1 ms or less for OFF-to-ON and 1 ms or less for ON-to-OFF under the stated rated-load conditions. That makes the module well suited to conventional discrete control tasks where relatively fast switching is required.
The module supports a maximum inrush current of approximately 4 A for 10 ms or less, according to the ML50 user documentation. Engineers should nevertheless evaluate the actual characteristics of the connected load rather than relying only on the nominal current rating, particularly when inductive or high-inrush devices are involved.
Power requirements are also modest. The published specification lists approximately 40 mA internal current consumption for the MLE-TN08A, while the external supply is specified as 12/24 VDC ±10% with ripple voltage of 4 Vp-p or less in the detailed module documentation.
The MLE-TN08A belongs to Honeywell's MasterLogic-50 family, which includes several digital and analog I/O configurations. The wider platform includes digital input, digital output, relay, and analog modules, allowing system designers to combine different I/O types according to the field application.
For maintenance teams working with existing MasterLogic installations, the MLE-TN08A can therefore be more than just an eight-point output card. It can serve as a direct replacement component when an installed system requires the same output architecture, voltage range, channel count, and wiring arrangement.
The module provides LED output indication, allowing technicians to check output status directly at the module. Its external connection uses a 10-point terminal block, with the available documentation identifying the eight output points and common connection.
For obsolete or difficult-to-source automation equipment, identifying the correct model is not simply a matter of matching the manufacturer and part number. Electrical details such as output topology, rated load voltage, current capacity, leakage current, response time, insulation method, and terminal arrangement can determine whether a replacement will function correctly.
The MLE-TN08A illustrates this clearly. An eight-channel output module with a similar physical appearance may still be unsuitable if it uses a different output type or has a different voltage/current specification. For maintenance engineers, checking the 12/24 VDC rating, 10.2–26.4 VDC operating range, 0.5 A per-point capacity, photo-coupler isolation, and 1 ms response specification is an important part of the replacement process.
