Accurate motor control depends on more than a drive command. Discover how pulse encoder feedback supports speed and position monitoring in industrial drive applications.
In industrial environments, a motor may need to maintain a specific speed, follow a controlled movement, or respond consistently as operating conditions change. Without suitable feedback, the drive has less direct information about the motor shaft's actual movement.
This is where the ABB NTAC-02 Pulse Encoder Interface Module becomes relevant. Designed for compatible ACS 600 frequency converter applications, it provides an interface for a digital pulse encoder connection. The encoder supplies feedback that can be used when motor speed or position information is required.

A pulse encoder converts shaft movement into electrical pulse signals. By reading these signals, a drive control system can obtain feedback related to motor speed and position.
The NTAC-02 connects a digital pulse encoder to the ACS 600 drive system. Its input channels handle A, B and Z signals. The A and B channels provide the pulse relationship used for movement feedback, while the Z channel supplies one pulse per revolution for positioning.

The NTAC-02 is part of the ACS 600 drive's optional feedback arrangement. It connects to the frequency converter through an optical DDCS communication link. In a typical arrangement, the NTAC module and other extension modules communicate with the NAMC board through a ring connection on Channel CH1.
This communication arrangement allows the drive control system to exchange data with connected modules. Each device on the DDCS link has an individual node number, configured through DIP switches inside the module enclosure.

Selecting an encoder interface module involves more than matching the model name. The installed drive, application program, module revision and encoder wiring arrangement all matter.
The NTAC-02 supports a maximum signal frequency of 100 kHz. Its encoder supply can be selected as 15 V DC or 24 V DC using the specified jumper arrangement. The module itself requires a 24 V DC supply with a tolerance of ±10%.
Before replacement, check the complete module label, encoder output type, supply selection and existing connections. The encoder cable arrangement should also match the installed system requirements.
Key points to consider when selecting, connecting or replacing the NTAC-02 Pulse Encoder Interface Module.
