Year-End Retrofit Planning Puts 24 V DC Input Compatibility in Focus
Why the Allen-Bradley 1769-IQ16 deserves a closer look before a Compact I/O replacement is approved
01
The Retrofit Question Is No Longer Just “Does It Have 16 Inputs?”
As maintenance teams prepare shutdown work and cabinet upgrades, compact digital input modules are often selected by point count alone. That shortcut can create avoidable commissioning delays. A correct replacement decision must also account for field voltage, sinking or sourcing orientation, input grouping, response time, backplane demand and installation position.
The 1769-IQ16 is a Compact I/O module with sixteen 24 V DC sinking or sourcing inputs. Its channels are divided into two groups of eight, with a separate DC common for each group. This arrangement gives panel builders two organized field circuits without treating all sixteen points as one undivided common group.

ENGINEERING CHECKPOINT
What Makes the 1769-IQ16 Fit — or Fail — in a Retrofit?
Signal architecture
24 V DC sinking or sourcing inputs, arranged as two eight-point groups with DC COM 1 and DC COM 2.
Operating voltage
10–30 V DC at 30°C; the upper limit becomes 26.4 V DC at 60°C.
Input timing
8 ms delay for the off-to-on transition and 8 ms for the on-to-off transition.
Electrical thresholds
Maximum off-state voltage is 5 V DC; maximum off-state current is 1.5 mA; minimum on-state voltage is 10 V DC; minimum on-state current is 2 mA.
Input impedance
3 kΩ nominal.
Backplane demand
115 mA at 5.1 V DC, with a power-supply distance rating of 8.
Physical profile
Approximately 118 × 35 × 87 mm and 270 g; one Compact I/O slot wide.
WHY TWO COMMONS MATTER
Wiring Direction Must Be Confirmed Before the Cabinet Is Energized
Each eight-point group can be wired for sinking or sourcing field devices. The common connection determines the current direction. A drawing copied from a different input family should never be applied solely because the terminal numbers appear similar.
Check sensor polarity, common arrangement, conductor labeling and field-supply return before installation. Mixed assumptions about PNP and NPN devices are a frequent cause of a module that powers correctly but never changes input state.
Pre-energization check

PURCHASING TAKEAWAY
A Reliable Retrofit Starts with Compatibility, Not Appearance
The 1769-IQ16 combines sixteen standard-speed 24 V DC inputs with dual common groups in a one-slot Compact I/O profile. Its value in a retrofit depends on matching the complete electrical and rack arrangement—not merely the channel count printed on the front label.
Electrical Fit Voltage, current direction and commons
Rack Fit Bus current and distance rating
Process Fit 8 ms response and operating temperature
