Extending ControlNet Over Long Distances: A Deep Dive into the Allen-Bradley 1786-RPFRL Fiber Ring Repeater

In industrial automation, reliability isn't just a metric—it’s the foundation of safety and productivity. For decades, Allen-Bradley’s ControlNet has been a workhorse network for high-speed, deterministic scheduled data delivery between controllers and I/O.

However, standard coax ControlNet cable has a hard limit: it caps out at 1,000 meters (about 3,280 feet) at best, and that distance drops drastically as you add more nodes. What happens when your plant expands, or you need to bridge a deterministic network across a massive mining facility, a water treatment plant, or a widespread oil and gas refinery?

That is exactly where the Allen-Bradley 1786-RPFRL Fiber Ring Long-Distance Repeater comes into play. Let’s break down what this module does, why it is critical for infrastructure expansion, and how it keeps your critical control networks immune to distance and electrical noise.

What is the 1786-RPFRL?

The 1786-RPFRL is a specialized optical media repeater designed for Rockwell Automation’s modular ControlNet fiber optic system. It installs directly into a 1786-RPFM modular repeater chassis.

While standard fiber modules (like the 1786-RPFR) are built for short-to-medium distances over glass fiber, the "L" in 1786-RPFRL stands for Long Distance. It utilizes high-power optical transceivers designed to shoot signals over massive geographic gaps while maintaining the strict, deterministic timing that ControlNet requires.

Key Features & Technical Strengths

1. Massive Distance Extension

Standard copper coax layouts require complex cabling and bridge architectures to go far. The 1786-RPFRL shatters those limits. Depending on the fiber type and quality used:

l It can extend a ControlNet segment up to 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) or more per hop.

l By cascading repeaters, you can build a deterministic network that spans an entire industrial complex without sacrificing data integrity.

2. High-Availability Ring Topology

The module natively supports Fiber Ring topologies. If a single segment of the fiber ring is severed by an excavator or damaged during plant maintenance, the 1786-RPFRL-driven network automatically reroutes data in the opposite direction. This self-healing architecture ensures your controllers never lose contact with remote I/O chassis.

3. Absolute Electromagnetic (EMI/RFI) Immunity

Because it converts electrical ControlNet signals into pulses of light over fiber optic cable, the 1786-RPFRL solves one of the biggest headaches in heavy industry: electrical noise. You can route this fiber next to high-voltage motor control centers (MCCs), variable frequency drives (VFDs), or power lines without risking signal corruption.

4. Modular Flexibility

The 1786-RPFRL is a slide-in module. It coexists perfectly with other 1786 repeater modules inside the same chassis. This allows you to mix and match media—for example, converting a copper coax network coming out of a ControlLogix chassis into a long-distance fiber run, and then splitting it back to short-range fiber or coax at the destination.

The 1746-IH16 module is an Allen-Bradley SLC 500 series input module with 16 inputs that is approved for use in Class 1, Division 2, Groups A, B, C, or D hazardous environments. It can also be used in all industrial environments that are not hazardous. The 1746-IH16 input module dissipates 5.17 Watts of total energy as heat during normal operation.

Allen Bradley 1746-IO8 Digital I/O Combination Module

The Allen-Bradley 1746-IO8 SLC 500 digital input/output combination module is a combination input/output module that can be installed in any slot of the 1746 I/O chassis (except slot 0). Each module has four 120V AC inputs and four relay contact outputs, with four contacts on each common terminal. Its operating voltage range (85-132V AC) is similar to most SLC 500 combination I/O modules, with output ratings of 5-65V AC and 5-125V DC at a frequency of 47-53Hz. At 5V DC, its backplane current is 0.03A; at 24V DC, its backplane current is 0.025A. The heat dissipation for all input contacts is 0.27W, and for each output contact, it is 0.133W. The module has a total heat dissipation of 3W, and the signal delay times for the ON and OFF states of the input and output are 35ms and 45ms, respectively.
